16/18U Coach of the Year - Shayne Davidson

Team: 16/18U Bright Futures

Years of Experience Coaching Fastpitch: 8 Years

Since 1992, Fargo has been home to Shayne Davidson, where he and his wife have built a life centered on family, community, and the outdoors. Together, they’ve raised two incredible children—Mitchell, now 22, and Olivia, 17—who have been at the heart of every adventure. Whether it’s hunting, riding motorcycles, playing Bingo with friends, or simply spending time outdoors, Shayne finds joy in the little moments that make life full.

Sports have always played a role in his family’s life, but his coaching journey truly began eight years ago, when his daughter expressed an interest in softball. That decision led Shayne to join the Lady Eagles, where he started coaching 12U softball and, over the years, guided players all the way through 18U. He also helped transition the Lady Eagles into what is now Fargo Area Fastpitch, carrying forward a commitment to providing opportunities for young athletes.

For Shayne, the recreational side of softball is where the magic happens. He sees the game as more than wins and losses—it’s about the girls, their love of the game, and the friendships and memories made on the field. His greatest hope is that every player who has been on his teams left the season with a smile, a stronger sense of confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the sport.

As a coach, Shayne believes the most important trait is recognizing the potential in every player. His philosophy is rooted in communication, honesty, and support. Whether a player is just starting out or has years of experience, Shayne emphasizes that the team is only as strong as its weakest link. That belief creates an environment where every athlete feels valued, encouraged, and part of something bigger than themselves.

Unlike some coaches who point to a single mentor, Shayne says he learns by observing—watching parents, other coaches, and players, and noticing how people respond to different approaches. From that, he’s carried forward one of his most important lessons: treat everyone with honesty and respect.

To new coaches, his advice is simple but powerful: don’t take it too seriously. At the end of the day, it’s a game. When coaches keep it fun, players relax, enjoy themselves, and develop not just skills, but a love for the sport.

Looking back, Shayne’s coaching story isn’t about trophies or titles. It’s about people—the players who grew in confidence, the families who supported them, and the joy of being part of a community that values the spirit of the game.

Thank you, Shayne, for the impact you’ve made on Fargo Area Fastpitch athletes and families!
